Baseball lessons were conducted during Physical Education classes as an activity to spread understanding of baseball. The objective was to increase the small baseball population by providing primary school children with an opportunity to experience baseball, and then any children who would like to learn more about baseball would be accepted by the locally managed boys' baseball league. The lessons were conducted utilising the ‘Teaching Materials for Simple Baseball Lessons to train Brilliant Players’ which were developed by the NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball Organisation).
A cyclical plan was implemented whereby three baseball lessons were implemented for each class across all age-groups at one primary school, and the pattern was then repeated at other elementary schools. The flow of the 80 minute Physical Education classes was as follows: 5 min to move between the classrooms and school grounds (to the gym), 10 min for a class introduction and to give notices about the next class, 20 min for basic practice of each movement, and 45 min for splitting into teams and playing a game. The first and second classes emphasised pitching and catching, and were conducted without playing games or the use of bats.
