For the first time in Japan, a running clinic was held focusing on thigh amputees and featuring two Paralympic medallist lecturers: athletes Heinrich Popow and Atsushi Yamamoto. A total of 12 people using prostheses took part, with ages ranging from teens to 50s and featuring beginner runners to actual games participants.
Led by the friendly and enthusiastic medallist duo, the highly motivated participants proactively seized the opportunity, with inspiring and moving involvement over the three-day event. As an accredited Sport for Tomorrow initiative and with PR activities supported by the SFTC secretariat, the unfolding proceedings were covered by multiple media. Although the event was the first of its kind and proved something of a learning process, the great success ultimately achieved was primarily thanks to the cooperation of all parties at Japan Para Athletics and Nihon University. With most people very keen to continue the initiative and continuing to work proactively with the SFTC in future, we hope to enrich this event even further in future. |
Feedback from :
It was my first time wearing a prosthetic leg for sports (leaf spring) and the rebound against the ground felt totally different from the leg I normally wear. I also play baseball and although up to now I’ve always had to get a pinch-runner to run in my place, I started wondering whether I can do it all by myself from now on.
