Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA ) members who teach judo, gymnastics, table tennis, and fencing in San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica, visited a primary school in San Vito, Coto Brus, and instructed the students in these four events. Children in rural Costa Rica experienced sports competition that they rarely have contact with and felt the joy, significance, and value of sports.
Although there is a large number of primary schools in Coto Brus, there are a few physical education teachers, and one teacher visits multiple schools to conduct physical education classes. As a result, compared to children in the capital city, rural children have few opportunities to experience sports over than soccer, which is the national sport of Costa Rica. For this programme, 168 children age 9 to 12 years participated in two-hour classes to experience judo, gymnastics, table tennis, and fencing.

Feedback from Local Contacts :
For the children of Coto Brus, these two days were in a replaceable experience. In particular, I would like to express my gratitude to the JICA members for their efforts to carry out this project for the development of Coto Brus. We will continue to cooperate with JICA so that we can conduct similar programmes in the future.
