We provided long-sleeved sweatshirts and trousers for exercising to an orphanage, the Hope of Children, in Battambang, Cambodia. By asking the SFTC for their assistance, we were able to collect about 360 items of clothing, weighing about 100 kg. By providing long-sleeved clothes and long trousers as supplies, we hope to create an environment where children in the country can feel more familiar with exercising and contribute to improving their health.

Battambang is little known in Japan. It is the area where the genocide of the Pol Pot regime was the severest, resulting in a great number of orphans. Currently, the Cambodian government asks each orphanage to set up a place for children there to exercise. Regarding clothing support from other countries, however, most clothing is short-sleeved tops and shorts due to the perception that Cambodia is a hot country. Actually, some days are chilly. Although girls are very interested in sports, they are sometimes reluctant to wear skirts or do not want to expose their skin when doing sports. To address the situation, we were able to send many long-sleeved tops and long trousers, working with the SFTC.

Comment from a local related to the programme:
In Cambodia, we have no physical education or undokai (athletic meets). Probably because children don’t know how to do physical exercise, their basic physical strength is low. They usually tend to sit when helping their parents and doing things. In order for the children to vigorously perform physical exercise and improve their basic physical strength against having colds, etc., the donation of sportswear was very much appreciated. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone involved. I believe that the momentum for the Olympic Games is growing in Japan. I hope that many possibilities and the potential of the good effects of sports will expand more and more in Cambodia.
Comments from participants:
“There were various people at the boccia venue, which can be played regardless of gender, nationality and physiques. I felt a friendly air in the enthusiastic atmosphere.” “I hope the circle of boccia will spread more in the world.” “It was a miracle in itself that I was able to persuade my first- and fifth-grade children to go out to the venue, while they were complaining, ‘What a hassle!’ On our way home after the event, they told me they would participate in this kind of event again. I was glad I brought them to the event.” “I had my boccia debut at the Non-Border Boccia Exchange programme. It was more fun than I imagined. I really enjoyed it without feeling any barriers of age, gender, disability or language.”
