In 2015, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted the Quality Physical Education (QPE) concept for children to learn inclusively with members of their own generation. As an advanced physical education nation, Japan was selected as a QPE policy supporting country and provided QPE policy support to the Republic of Fiji. Advice on formulating policies relating to physical education and support was provided and monitoring of on-site conditions was conducted.
In the Republic of Fiji, it is said that more than 80% of deaths are due to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and lifestyle related diseases, making this a serious issue. Although the importance of exercise is understood in Fiji, school physical education is not adequate. At many schools, only sports are conducted during physical education classes, and the inability of students who are not skilled at sports is conspicuous.
Under these circumstances, this project seeks to contribute to the enhancement of physical education, prevention of lifestyle related diseases, and improvement of physical activity and sports participation rate in Fiji by supporting the formulation of policies on physical education and sports.
