An opportunity was created for foreign students enrolled at Rikkyo University to experience sumo wrestling, a part of traditional Japanese traditional, and to have sports students who are usually busy with club activities participate in international exchange.

Under the guidance of the university’s sumo wrestlers, foreign students attempted the basic motions of leg raising and stomping, wooden pole, and shuffling, and also experienced head-to-head training. In addition, students learned not only about competing but also about etiquette such as greetings and not turning one’s back on altars.
After experiencing sumo wrestling, the foreign students ate chanko-nabe using ingredients considering their religious customs, and further exchanges were made.

Feedback from Participant :

Although I have been interested in traditional Japanese culture for a long time, as soon as I heard that there was an event where I could experience sumo wrestling, Japan’s national sport, I applied for it straight away. Today, I had the best experience since I came to Japan.(Comments from foreign students)
